Ardsley Park — A Tour of Savannah Luxury Homes

Ardsley Park, Savannah, GA

Harry Hays Lattimore, William Lattimore and other anonymous partners in the Ardsley Park Land Corporation developed Ardsley Park, one of Savannah’s most popular in-town neighborhoods, in 1910.

It was designed to be Savannah’s first subdivision to accommodate automobiles.

(View Homes For Sale in Ardsley Park and Chatham Crescent.)

Where Is Ardsley Park?

Officially, Ardsley is located south of Victory Drive and north of Columbus Drive. Bull Street forms its western boundary, while Waters Avenue set its eastern border.

Some also consider the Chatham Crescent neighborhood to be part of Ardsley Park. Both areas were named to the National Register of Historic Places as Ardsley Park in 1985.

Much like, General Oglethorpe’s plan for Downtown Savannah, Ardsley’s developers laid it out as a grid of squares.

Chatham Crescent

Granger’s Chatham Land and Hotel Company developed the nearby Chatham Crescent neighborhood. The design was inspired by the Beaux Arts plan popular during that time period.

If you’ve ever driven down Victory Drive or Washington Avenue, you’ve probably seen the outdoor mall, lined with palmettos leading to Savannah Arts Academy (formerly Savannah High School). The land where the school was built was originally slated to be home to the luxurious Hotel Georgia.

The plan was to use the hotel to attract wealthy Northerners in hopes that they would purchase a second in Chatham Crescent. But the Hotel Georgia failed and instead the area attracted some of Savannah’s wealthiest and most well known residents.

Ardsley Park — Mansions, Traditional Homes and Bungalows

Ardsley Park is home to some of Savannah’s most stately mansions and charming bungalows. You’ll also find a selection of beautiful traditional-styled homes.

(View all Ardsley Park homes now.)

In addition, the neighborhood is known for its picturesque beauty, wide tree-lined streets, and nearby parks and recreational areas. If you’re ever in the area, you’re sure to see plenty of bikers, walkers and runners enjoying the outdoors.

Richmond Hill & The Ford Plantation – A Tour of Savannah Luxury Homes

Richmond Hill Waterfront CommunityRichmond Hill, GA, a waterfront community, is located less than 20 miles from Savannah Chatham County. It is also home to one of the area’s most prestigious neighborhoods — The Ford Plantation.

(View Luxury Homes in Richmond Hill and The Ford Plantation.)

Bryan County’s Richmond Hill offers all the beauty and appeal of Low Country living. Much of its recent growth has come as homeowners seek an alternative to the the hustle and bustle — and congestion of life in Savannah and Chatham County, as well as lower taxes.

A Historic and Growing Community

A year after he founded Georgia, Oglethorpe awarded grants of land on the Ogeechee River. Bryan County was established on this land in 1793. In 1941, much of this area was renamed Richmond Hill.

Today the fast-growing community has nearly 10,000 (9,549) residents.  The population has grown 33 percent since 2000.

Waterfront Living

In addition to seeking smaller town living and lower taxes, many residents love to live and play on the water. Many homes front or have easy access to the water, as the eastern border of the city is the Ogeechee River. This makes it easy for homeowners to enjoy boating, fishing or relaxing on a dock taking in the magnificent views.

The Ford Plantation

The Ford PlantationThe Ford Plantation is a private, gated community located on the waterfront. The luxurious neighborhoods are in an area that was once an antebellum rice plantation. The site, named for Henry Ford,  once served as a winter retreat for the captain of the automobile industry.

The exclusive 1,800-acre community is home to 400 families. They enjoy the perks of living on the coast and have access to some of the Savannah area’s most renowned sporting facilities and amenities.

  • Championship Golf Course (designed and recently redesigned by world famous golf architect, Pete Dye)
  • Fresh and Salt Water Fishing Areas
  • Deep Water Marina
  • Equestrian Center
  • Tennis Courts
  • Fitness Facilities
  • Swimming Pools
  • 10 Miles of Scenic Horse, Biking and Hiking trails

World Famous Golf Course

The Ford Plantation Golf CourseThe original designer of the Ford Plantations golf course, Pete Dye   recently redesigned it  to the tune of $7 million-plus. Golf Digest immediately took notice and honored the course as one of its Best New Courses for 2014.

Dye had this to say about his redesign in a recent issue of The Post  and Courier:

“I looked at The Ford Plantation as a unique chance and almost a blank slate. We wanted to come back and make the course better, and we’ve done that. The Ford Plantation golf course will stand among my finest Southern designs.”

Why Richmond Hill

If you love living on the water and want to be near — but not in Savannah — Richmond Hill may be your ideal home buying location. And if you want to live an active sporting life in a luxurious,  private community with a nationally-recognized  golf course and sporting facilities, The Ford Plantation may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Tybee Island – A Tour of Savannah Luxury Homes

Tybee Island GALess than 20 miles from Historic Downtown Savannah, you’ll discover Savannah’s only beach, Tybee Island. (View Tybee Island homes here.)

Tybee is a popular tourist destination, but about 3,000 locals also call it home.  In addition, many people from Savannah, Atlanta and areas less than a day’s drive live on Tybee part of the year. Most came to the island to visit before falling in love and buying a second home or relocating after retirement.

Natural Beauty and Local Charm

The historical island sill retains its natural beauty and off-the-beaten-path charm for beach lovers of all ages. Yet, it is also home to some of Savannah’s best restaurants, serving award-winning cuisine that reflects its local character.  It also plays host to many fun events throughout the year, including the Pirate Fest and the Beach Bum Parade.

If you’re interested in investing in vacation property, Tybee has lots of opportunities. You’ll never lack for guests. In fact, most spring and summer months, it’s hard to find a vacancy on the island.

Waterfront Living on Tybee Island

Tybee Island Sunrise

Tybee Island also gives luxury homebuyers every kind of waterfront living to choose from. You can buy a house overlooking the three miles of public beach and have a breathe-taking view of the  Atlantic Ocean. Or, if you prefer, you’ll find homes sitting right on the back river, some with deep water docks for fishing, boating and enjoying your favorite drink.  If you love the beauty of the salt marshes, you will  be happy to discover marsh front homes with expansive views.

Almost all the homes are a short walk from the beach or the back river. In fact, it’s only a four or five block walk from one side to the other.

Tybee Neighborhoods and Luxury Homes

Tybee Island House

The “North Beach” area has more of a residential feel to it, while the far south end is the destination of many vacationers. It’s also where many of the “touristy” shops, bars and restaurants are located.

If you’d like to get a taste of the types of homes available, follow this link to view all Tybee homes for sale. You’ll find everything from one bedroom condos to luxurious beach homes with more than six bedrooms.

Lots to Do and See

Tybee Island Lighthouse

You’ll also find plenty to do on Tybee Island, as well as Historic Downtown Savannah, which is less than 20 miles away.

On Tybee you can enjoy fishing off public piers, in the surf, or on an offshore or deep sea charter. Or you can join the bikers who love to pedal all around the island. There’s also nature trails, historic landmarks, including the Tybee Lighthouse and Fort Screven.  You can also take in dolphin tours, the Marine Science Center or Fort Pulaski.

In Downtown Savannah, you can enjoy  River Street, City Market or simply tour all the historic houses and squares. You’ll also discover more heralded restaurants and nationally recognized events, such as the Savannah Musical Festival and Savannah Film Festival — and of course, the world famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Fall In Love With Tybee

If you love the beach, the sunshine and a relaxed lifestyle on the coast, Tybee Island may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Over the next few months, I’m going to take you on a tour of luxury homes in Savannah’s most desirable communities. I will survey Savannah’s most beautiful neighborhoods, including the Historic District and The Landings on Skidaway Island. Isle_of_Hope_Savannah
Isle of Hope – Savannah, GA

In addition, I’ll look at golf course communities — like Savannah Quarters — in West Chatham, which are close to the airport and some of Savannah’s biggest employers, such as Gulfstream. I’ll also go just beyond the borders of Chatham County to Richmond Hill, which offers luxurious living on the waterfront and neighborhoods, such as The Ford Plantation.

Isle of Hope – The Community

However, today, I want to start with my own community, Isle of Hope.

Isle of Hope - Bluff Drive
Isle of Hope – Bluff Drive

If you’re looking for luxury living on an enchanting and quaint island with scenic views, close-knit neighbors, and safe neighborhoods, Isle of Hope may be the perfect place for you and your family.

This charming island community is close to the city of Savannah, but offers luxury homebuyers many characteristics associated with a far away and secluded island. It boasts one of the most desirable and picturesque communities in all of Savannah. The luxurious historic manor homes on Bluff Drive overlook the Skidaway River and come with deep-water docks — and are some of the most sought after homes in the Savannah area.

Isle of Hope Marina
View of the Isle of Hope Marina in the Distance

The Isle of Hope Marina, the only commercial venture on the island, is also located on Bluff Drive. The marina provides homeowners a place to dock their boats, entertain friends at a beautiful outdoor venue, and kayak, fish or crab with family and friends.

Isle of Hope is truly a community that brings back thoughts and feelings of a bygone era. Everyday, you’ll see neighbors walking down the street together and kids riding their bikes, swimming, and fishing with one another. On the weekends and weeknights,  you’ll find youth soccer and t-ball games on fields that are within walking or biking distance from most homes on the island.

Isle of Hope – Types of Homes

Isle of Hope offers a mix of luxury homes ($500,000+) and homes in the $250,000 to $500,000 range.  The more expensive homes usually rest on or near the water and boast breath-taking views and sprawling yards.

Follow this link to view a list of properties — priced above $500,000 — on, or very near Isle of Hope.  This will provide you a good sampling of the types of luxury homes you’ll find.

Isle of Hope – Convenient to Local Restaurants, Shopping and Recreation

In addition to luxury waterfront living, Isle of Hope offers several churches and has a community pool. Less than a mile away, you’ll also find an active restaurant and retail area with many local eateries and boutique specialty shops. The nearby shopping center also includes a grocery store and pharmacy.  If you enjoy working out or doing yoga, you can also find those activities close by.

More Great Savannah Neighborhoods

As you might guess, I am partial to the area and have enjoyed living and raising my family in the Isle of Hope community.  But, there are many other attractive neighborhoods throughout the Savannah area, providing luxury homebuyers exactly what they want. You can live on the water or a golf course, in the Historic District or a gated community, or near the airport or major employers like Gulfstream. You can even enjoy beautiful Tybee Island for a few months out of the year and use the property as an income-generating vacation rental the rest of the time.

It doesn’t matter if you are moving here for a new job, seeking to retire, or simply looking for a better place to raise your family. Savannah has it all — and after the “Tour of Homes” you should have a great idea of which area fits you and your lifestyle best.
